About

Transition is all about using an incredible power that human beings possess in abundance but use quite rarely: the power of imagination. There is no question now that Climate Change is happening, and that human beings are the chief cause. We are in a unique position to do something about it before the climate reaches a point of no return (more about that later). We also know that oil is a finite resource and that as the easily accessed oil starts to run out it will cost more to extract. Even if there is lots of oil left (and we burn it at an astonishing rate) the price is going to continue to rise so that it may as well be considered rare. What attracts me about the Transition movement is that it faces these issues and responds in a powerful and creative way. Our task – should we choose to accept it – is to start imagining the future. This is not about science fiction, although it is about science. We need to harness the information that science is providing, and be rigorous about what is reliable, and then use the artistic/creative powers at our disposal to imagine and then implement the kind of society that can live on less oil (making the most of the resources we have) and bring about the reduction in Carbon that will prevent catastrophic climate change from taking place. So this blog is going to be about facing the facts and imagining the future. I am seeking to be relentlessly positive, imaginative and realistic (two of these don’t always come naturally) and hope that others will find this a helpful basis for further discussion and – crucially – action. The task is to do what most of us want to do anyway – to find our future home, a place that is sustainable and beautiful and life-affirming, one we can be proud to show to others and leave to future generations.
